Monday's Sports Update

The UNK mens basketball team picked up a pair of wins, in their final home games of the regular season. On Friday, the Lopers rallied from a 21-point deficit to defeat CSU-Pueblo 67-65. On Saturday, the UNK men topped Colorado Springs 87-78. With the wins, the Lopers (15-10, 13-8 RMAC) remain in contention to host an RMAC Tournament first round game on February 28th.

The UNK women defeated CSU-Pueblo 98-88 in double-overtime Friday night, but then lost to Colorado Springs 73-66 at the Health and Sports Center Saturday night. With the loss, the Lopers (7-19, 7-14 RMAC) see their post-season hopes come to an end. The UNK men and women will close out their regular season schedules this Saturday at Chadron.

The UNK baseball team was swept by 8th ranked Emporia State this past weekend in Kansas. The Lopers fell by a score of 11-5 Friday, 4-2 Saturday and 12-3 yesterday. The UNK baseball (0-3) team travels to Missouri Western State, another MIAA school, this weekend.

The UNK softball team went 3-1 at the RMAC/NSIC Crossover Tournament in Pueblo, Colo., this weekend, beating Concordia-St. Paul and Black Hills State Saturday afternoon. The Lopers (3-3) beat Winona State, 11-9, on Friday and followed that up by defeating the CU Golden Bears, 6-3, and the Division II-newcomer BHSU Hornets, 16-1 in 5 innings, the next day. UNK fell to 13th-ranked Minnesota State (2-3) by a 10-1 score yesterday. The UNK softball team begins RMAC play at Regis this weekend.

Senior Brooke Harris and junior Paul Pape led the UNK track & field team at the Nebraska Tune up meet Friday night in Lincoln by setting new school records. Harris (Dickens/Wallace H.S.) ran a 4:56.80 to place fifth out of 31 runners in the women’s mile. Not only does the time put her on the national list but it also bests the previous mark set by Michelle Dill (4:57.63) in 2008. Eleven years to the day, Pape (Lincoln H.S.) broke Joe Cooper’s record at 800 meters. Pape, already on the national list in the event, ran a 1:51.43 to come in second in a field of 36. The UNK track and field team travels to Chadron State this weekend for the RMAC Championships.

Sophomore Cassie Bonds broke a 20-year old record in the 100 butterlfy as the UNK women's swimming team finished ninth at the 2012 RMAC Championships this weekend in San Antonio, Texas. In prelims Friday, she swam an 59.84, besting the record of 1:00.68 in December 1992. Bonds went on to swim a 1:00.27 in the event finals, good for sixth place, the best finish for any Aqualoper this weekend.

Jordan Hooper notched her 11th double-double of the year with 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds to power the 16th ranked Nebraska women's basketball team to a 68-59 victory over Wisconsin yesterday in Lincoln. With the victory, the Husker women improved to 20-6 overall and 9-5 in the Big Ten, their fourth 20-win campaign in the past six years. The Husker women will travel to East Lansing Thursday for a game against Michigan State. The Nebraska mens basketball team snapped their three-game losing streak Saturday with a 80-57 win over Illinois in Lincoln. The Husker men play at Purdue Wednesday night.

The Nebraska baseball team was swept by Gonzaga this past weekend in Arizona (4-7, 8-10, 4-5). The Husker baseball team (0-3) will be back on the road this weekend when they head to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the Kleberg Bank College Classic at Whataburger Field. Nebraska will open play on Friday, when they face Utah from the Pac-12 Conference at 2 p.m. The Huskers will then play two games on Saturday when they play the Utes again at 3 p.m., before facing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. NU will finish the weekend on Sunday against UNLV at 11 a.m.

The Tri-City Storm have now won 4-straight at home, after picking up a pair of wins this past weekend.
